Sour Cream Cut-out Cookies

This is the recipe my mother used to make her Christmas cookies and is still a traditional part of Christmas every year.

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar
16 oz. sour cream
2 tsp. salt
6 cups flour
2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups shortening
2 well-beaten eggs

Mix sugar, flour, soda, nutmeg and salt.  Add shortening, then eggs and part of sour cream.  Cut into dry ingredients.  Add rest of sour cream.  Chill.  Roll out and cut using cookie cutters.  Bake at 350º for 10 minutes.  This will make about 10,000 cookies.  When it comes time to ice and decorate them your best bet is to invite every kid in the neighborhood over to do it.

See the icing recipe for appropriate icing.
